A new wave of alternative yacht destinations is attracting owners seeking to cruise beyond traditional cruising grounds, according to the 2025 Knight Frank Wealth Report.
Drawing on data from Boat International, which has tracked the global superyacht fleet over the past year, the report provides fascinating insights into the best yacht destinations and emerging superyacht hubs such as the Red Sea, Indonesia, New Zealand, Alaska, and the Arctic.
The growth in yachting and the shift to more alternative destinations beyond traditional yachting hotspots is being driven by the next generation of consumers who are reshaping the yachting industry, along with a growing population of ultra-wealthy individuals. According to the Knight Frank 2025 Report, 2024 saw a 4.4% increase in the number of individuals worth over US$10 million.
Best yacht destinations: The Mediterranean & Florida
The Mediterranean continues to reign supreme as the ultimate summer destination for superyacht owners. As BOAT International’s Editor-in-Chief, Stewart Campbell, remarks, “there is no rival” when it comes to cruising between May and September.
The iconic coastline from Monaco to Genoa remains the epicentre of the superyacht Mediterranean season and one of the world’s best yacht destinations, while the allure of Greece and Turkey is steadily rising, the report notes.
Capri, part of Italy’s famed Amalfi Coast, continues to be a highly popular destination. Dispelling a common myth, Campbell points out that the off-season doesn’t spark a mass migration to the Caribbean and that only around 10% of the Mediterranean fleet crosses the Atlantic, with most owners opting to use winter for upgrades and maintenance.
Southern Florida continues to dominate as a leading yachting hotspot, especially popular with American yacht owners wishing to explore traditional cruising destinations. Florida is also especially popular with fishing enthusiasts, offering superb opportunities to reel in game fish like wahoo, tuna, and marlin.
This sun-soaked region experiences a seasonal flow, the Knight Frank report notes, with yachts journeying north to New England during the summer, then returning south as winter approaches. When temperatures drop, many vessels continue on to the shimmering Caribbean, including the islands of The Bahamas, drawn by the crystal-clear waters, incredible white sandy beaches, and tropical appeal.
Emerging best yacht destinations and hotspots
The Red Sea
The Red Sea is fast emerging as an exciting new frontier in luxury yachting, the report notes. The region’s untouched waters and vibrant coral reefs make it especially appealing to watersports enthusiasts, including those wishing to enjoy superb diving conditions.
Saudi Arabia’s visionary coastal projects aim to transform the region into a premier winter destination, providing a compelling alternative to the Caribbean. Its strategic location—bridging the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, with access to idyllic spots like the Seychelles and Maldives—adds to its appeal.
However the report notes that challenges remain. Limited infrastructure and ongoing security concerns near the Gulf of Aden have driven up insurance costs, prompting many yacht owners to take the longer but safer route around the Cape of Good Hope.
Indonesia
With more than 18,000 islands, Indonesia presents limitless opportunities for exploration. In the report, Campbell points to Wayag Island as a stunning example of the region’s breathtaking natural beauty, capturing the spirit of adventure that draws intrepid yacht owners to these remote and captivating waters. Much like the Red Sea, the region’s crystal-clear waters and stunning marine life make it a highly appealing destination to those wishing to maximise their time on the water and make use of all their yacht’s water toys.
New Zealand
New Zealand has firmly established itself as the Pacific’s leading yachting destination, with the report noting that Australia simply “can’t compete with the cruising grounds that New Zealand offers.”
New Zealand’s prime location offers easy access to idyllic locales like French Polynesia and Fiji. However, the report notes that logistical hurdles remain for owners based in the Mediterranean. The high fuel costs of relocating vessels and the long-haul travel required to visit mean that many prefer the convenience of staying in the Mediterranean.
Alaska & Western Canada
Alaska and Western Canada may see fewer visitors due to the sparse number of harbours along the Pacific coast, but those who venture north are rewarded with awe-inspiring landscapes as they reach British Columbia and beyond. This remote, untamed region holds strong appeal for yacht owners in search of seclusion and the raw beauty of nature and is growing in appeal as yachting enthusiasts continue to search for more remote destinations to explore.
The Northwest Passage & the Arctic
The expanding fleet of explorer yachts is being driven by the yacht industry’s younger generation of yacht owners and their desire to explore more remote and off-the-beaten-track destinations. According to the Global Order Books and Boat International, 6% of the world’s luxury yacht fleet are now expedition vessels and there are a record number of explorer yacht projects in development.
